Four things to know about onboarding remotely as a Software Engineer at Ometria

Topics: Life at Ometria

Starting a new job is definitely exciting but can be a bit stressful at the same time, especially if you have never done it remotely before. At Ometria, we have designed our remote onboarding process to help you not only get up to speed as quickly as possible, but to also make you feel like an Ometrian straightaway.

Given COVID-19, remote onboarding is likely to be the reality for the coming months, so whether you are looking for a role in London, Southampton or a fully remote position, our Engineering Manager Michal shares four things you need to know about onboarding remotely into the Ometria Engineering team.

Equipment and tools

Before your official start date, you will receive a package with equipment and initial instructions. If you have any specific equipment requirements, please let us know and we’ll do our best to make sure you have everything you need to be productive. Typically, you receive a laptop, a laptop riser, an external keyboard and mouse, and a USB-C adapter.

In terms of communication tools, we use Gmail, Slack and Zoom, and you will receive login instructions on your first day.

Before your first day

Ometria’s People team will be in touch to make sure you have everything you need and will provide clear instructions on what to do. One of our core values is, ‘It’s awesome to be here’, so we’ll also assign you an Ometrian buddy to help you get settled during your first few weeks.

Your first day

Your line manager will call you first thing to introduce themselves, walk you through your first day and answer any questions you may have.

Next, you’ll be introduced to your team, your Ometrian buddy and your Engineering buddy, each of whom will be glad to answer any questions you might have during your onboarding.

After introductions, your manager will go through the “onboarding kit” with you, which explains the onboarding process, expectations and how you will be supported in the coming months.

To ensure successful onboarding, we provide a dashboard on Airtable with all the tasks you need to complete in order to:

  • configure your local environment,
  • understand the system architecture from different angles (backend, frontend and infrastructure),
  • identify who is who in Engineering and how they can support you.

Meeting Ometrians outside of the team

Over the course of the first two weeks, you will be invited to introduction sessions for all Ometria departments, enabling you to understand how Ometria works as a company.

We also host a range of remote events for Ometrians, including weekly all-hands called the OA (Ometrians Assemble) as well as a range of social events like pub quizzes, lunchtime cook-a-longs, Friday drinks, bingo and book clubs.

We also use the Donut app in Slack so you can meet different Ometrians for a coffee every week.

We have a lot of non-work related Slack channels focused on music, history, podcasts, TV and film, pets, and food, just to name a few, and we’re always open to new suggestions too!

We have already successfully onboarded several remote engineers and can’t wait for you to join our team! If you are interested in a position, please check out our careers page at www.ometria.com/careers.
